How to Create a Group in gPanel

Create groups in gPanel to segment users, assign permissions, and manage communication efficiently.

In a modern enterprise environment, Groups serve as the engine for both communication and permission management. While most users think of a group as a simple email distribution list, administrators use them to define security boundaries, manage access to sensitive documents, and streamline license assignments.

By creating groups through gPanel, you gain a centralized interface to ensure that every group in your domain is correctly configured with the necessary descriptions and settings from the moment it is provisioned.

Creating groups through gPanel rather than the native Google Admin Console allows for better oversight and the use of Templates. This prevents "configuration drift," where groups are created with inconsistent privacy settings or missing descriptions.

Centralized creation also allows you to enforce naming conventions (e.g., Dept-Marketing-Internal@domain.com), which makes the directory much easier for end-users and IT auditors to navigate.

Step-by-Step: Creating a Group in gPanel

  1. Navigate to Directory > Groups. Click the Add icon in the upper right corner.
    Create-Group_Button

  2. The Create Group popup will appear. Fill in the following fields:

    • Group Name (Required): Enter a clear, recognizable name for the group. This name will appear in the Global Address List.

    • Email Address (Required): Define the unique email prefix for the group. Ensure this follows your organization's standardized naming policy.

    • Description: Provide a brief explanation of the group’s purpose (e.g., "Used for North America Sales Team project collaboration"). This helps other admins understand the group's intent during future audits.

    • Choose a Template (Optional): If your organization has pre-defined group templates, you can select one here to instantly apply specific security and membership settings.
